By significantly reducing the amount of airborne bacteria and viruses, the Healthy Fan helps cut down on illness in a household, especially in those with vulnerable individuals, like infants, children with upper respiratory illnesses and the elderly. Used as a preventive measure, Healthy Fan will not only help keep family members healthy, but will also serve as an economic investment, reducing down time and lost productivity due to illness, along with minimizing health care expenses. Please read our collection of Q&As for more information on how the Healthy Fan can help keep your family healthy.
Healthy Fan Medical Q&A
How does UV-C work against germs?
Healthy Fan’s intense level of UV-C energy emits energy in the proven spectrum that alters the DNA of germs and kills them. The result is a more than 99 percent reduction in airborne bacteria and viruses.
Isn’t it better to expose myself and the children to germs so they develop immunity?
The Healthy Fan only lessens the concentration of germs and certainly does not affect exposure outside of the home. The hope is that Healthy Fan can provide some degree of added protection so that germs may challenge the immune system but perhaps not overcome it enough to cause infection. We defer to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in this matter and urge you to follow guidelines on flu shots, etc.
How effective is the flu vaccine?
The effectiveness of the vaccine can vary and depends in part on the match between the viruses in the vaccine and flu viruses that are circulating in the community. If these are closely matched, vaccine effectiveness (VE) is higher. If they are not closely matched, VE can be reduced. During well-matched years, clinical trials have shown VE to be as little as 70% among healthy adults.
I’ve heard of a study connecting ceiling fans with SIDS prevention. How does this work?
Beyond eliminating the bacteria and viruses that cause many common illnesses, research has also shown that using a product like Healthy Fan may help prevent more serious health risks for children. SIDS, or a sudden unexplained death of a seemingly healthy baby, kills about 2,500 infants annually. It is the leading cause of death in children between one month and one year of age. A study published in 2008 in the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine found that using a fan while a baby is sleeping can cut the risk of SIDS by 72 percent. The study was based on the hypothesis that SIDS is related to babies re-breathing exhaled carbon dioxide that gets trapped near them in bedding. The study suggested that the use of a fan increases air circulation, thus minimizing the build up of trapped carbon dioxide and the risk of re-breathing.
Swine Flu Virus Spreads Across U.S.
By John Zak MD
A unique strain of swine flu is raising public health concerns from southern California to New York City, from El Paso to Cleveland. The suspected killer of now more than a hundred people in Mexico, where authorities closed schools, museums, libraries and theaters in the capital on Friday to try to contain an outbreak that has spurred concerns of a global flu epidemic.
The worrisome new virus – which swaps genetic material from pigs, birds and humans in a way researchers have difficulty matching- also has sickened at least dozens of people in Texas, California, Ohio and New York; and has closed schools throughout the country. At present there have been no deaths reported in the U.S. Like regular human seasonal influenza the very young and the very old are most susceptible to the virus.
